Latest news - Buffalo Federal Courthouse Has Mold

The story of the Buffalo Federal Courthouse having mold is not new. What is new is that the clean-up will be handled by the installing contractor. The mold problem and related mold symptoms by employees has been sourced at improper installation (sealing) of drywall at the top and bottom.

Why Is The Relevant?

There are thousand of contractors being hired daily. In addition to this there are thousands of unlicensed contractors doing licensed work. If a Federally vetted contractor such as this could make a mistake on a simple routine task, how much more can the lesser trained and unlicensed contractors be making the same mistakes.

This leads to tens of thousands and even more potential problems nationwide. Not in commercial building but in the homes of average citizens. This is relevant because people are exposed to risk. They believe they are "getting work done" but in reality they are risking their exposure to shoddy work, water damage, and the resulting mold problems.

Lesson To Be Noted.

The goal here is not lecture. But to make this a fact worthy of note. The contractor you hire is critical. Hiring "just anyone" to work on your home is not always a good choice. Of course, as in the news story, even the a Federally vetted contractor can make mistakes.

Watch work being completed. Be present for building inspections. Ask the contractor on things that do not "look right". If the contractor does not answer you, then ask the building inspector. In the end it is your home and your health you are safeguarding.

Updated News - Federal Trade Commission Settlement With Oreck - Updated News

Update to the settlement for the $750,000.

The case reveled around Orecks marketing materials that made a direct link between their products and the ability to ward off sickness.

The marketer was accused of making these claims as a direct link between there Ultraviolet Vacuum that has the feature of an Air Cleaner and the claimed fact that it can clean the air to the point of warding off sickness.

Is What Oreck Did That Bad?

The problem with this entire settlement is that the FTC and Oreck seem to be parsing words. Oreck may have pushed the limit of credibility by claiming its products were "flu fighters" but there is a point of where the government may have been fishing for a fine to collect.

Is It Really Deceptive?

When you read the entire settlement you see that it was not that Oreck was lying. It was that they did not have sufficient scientific studies to back their claims. I know many will disagree but I have to come down on the side of the FTC on this one. Oreck should not make such forceful claims without a study to back it up.

Caveat Emptor?

Maybe. But as a consumer you do not expect rampant claims without evidence. You also expect the FTC to protect the public welfare by stopping the marketer, which they did.

Now it is Oreck's turn. Will they now commission the studies to prove their product and claims. Or will they move on to a new ad campaign? That is the question.
